Colouring Clara from Visible Image 5

I am absolutely in love with Clara, the latest character stamp from Visible Image Stamps.

How gorgeous is she, all sassy and steampunky :)
We were having a conversation in the DT group about coluring her and I offered to do a tutorial to show how I coloured her hat, as larger white spaces can be scary.  Since I was doing the hat, I also did photos for how I colourd all of her so over the next few days I am going to share with you how I coloured Clara. I am no expert by the way!!

I like to colour from darkest to lightest, its personal preference, but I find I get a better effect this way.  My preferred cardstock is Diamond White from the Paperterie, and for my stamped images I use 300msg.

The first thing I do is decide where the light source is coming from, and I usually either go for top left or right as I find this easiest.
So for this image the light is coming from the top left hand corner as I look at it.

This is the final instalment of my tutorials on how to colour Clara.
For the hat band and umbrella I used burnt orange, orange, bright orange, tequila sunrise promarkers - I love orange and purple as a colour combination.

I started with burnt orange and outlined the darkest areas on the hat band and inside the umbrella.

I then went over those areas and into the white space with orange,

And then with bright orange.

I added depth to the shaded areas using burnt orange.

And blended it using orange.

I added burnt orange to the outer part of the umbrella, thinking about where the darkest parts would be.

Then I went over then coloured parts and into the white space with orange,
 and then bright orange.
I then went over with burnt orange followed by organe to darken up the shaded areas. And added bright orange to more of the white space.
Finally I blended everything together with tequila sunrise.

Tomorrow you will see the card I made using Clara ;)

Visible Image DT post - Shabby Chic Katie

Today I am showing you Katie from Visible Image Stamps.

Visible Image Blog Badge, Blinkie

I coloured Katie in using my pens and added stickles to her feet and the butterflies.  The dp are all from First Edition and I distressed the edges for that shabby look.  I layered up lace and organza ribbon and added a bow.  I frantaged the Hobbycutz lasercut leaf using aged ivory frantage, and the butterflies using aged aqua frantage, and finally added some muslin and flowers.  The sentiment is from the More than words set 7.

Colouring Clara from Visible Image 4

I am absolutely in love with Clara, the latest character stamp from Visible Image Stamps.

How gorgeous is she, all sassy and steampunky :)
We were having a conversation in the DT group about coluring her and I offered to do a tutorial to show how I coloured her hat, as larger white spaces can be scary.  Since I was doing the hat, I also did photos for how I colourd all of her so over the next few days I am going to share with you how I coloured Clara.

For the top I used burnt orange, orange, bright orange, tequila sunrise promarkers - I love orange and purple as a colour combination.

I started with burnt orange and outlined the darkest areas on the the right hand side of her top as I look at it.

Then I added the orange over the top and into the white space, remembering she is a girly so there is shading elsewhere!

The I worked bright orange over and into the white space, paying attention to where the lightest parts would be - namely on her chest!

I defined the shadows again using burnt orange,

And blended them in using orange.

Bright orange was worked over and into some of the white space left,
before I went over the top using tequila sunrise.
Tomorrow I will be back for the final instalment on how I coloured the umbrella and hat band.

That Craft Place Challenge

Its Sunday and that means it's time for a That Craft Place challenge and the theme this week is make an altered item.

I painted the wooden plant pots and tray using acylic paints, and mixed colours together to get the colours I wanted.  I then covered the pots using the decopatch technique, PVA glue and Basic Grey patterned paper.  Ellie and Beth helped cover the pots and got very gluey!!  Having sealed them using modge podge I put oasis in the pots and covered with tissue paper stained using distress ink in a mini mister.  Ellie painted the flowers and I stamped over them using the Visible image crackled background and versamark ink.  The flowers were embossed using gold embossing powder.  We die cut the felt flowers, layered them and added the brads.

Colouring Clara by Visible image 3

Today I am going to show you how I coloured her skirt and her boots.  I used the cool greys and black for this.

So I start with cool grey 5 and shade the darkest areas - down the right side of the skirt and the pleasts and creases.

Then I go over the CG5 with Cool Grey 4 and work into the white spaces and build up the pleats nad creases.
Then I go back in with CG5 working over the shading already done.
And then again with CG4 working into more of the white space.
Taking your time to layer up the colours means you will get a darker effect without needing lots of black, that can look quite harsh.

Now I use some black just at the darkest ppoints and in the creases and pleats to make sure they are defined.

I go over the black with CG5, working the CG5 into the black so there isn't a harsh line.

Finally I went over all the skirt in cool grey 4.

I used exactly the same prinicples for the boots :-

Starting with CG5 on the right hand side whre it will be darker ...
 then adding CG4 ...
Before adding black into the creases and darkest parts.
Then CG5 yo blend the black out.
And finally CG4 over them all.

Tomorrow I will be back with how I coloured her top.
